December 22, 2003 - The GSE Implicit Subsidy and Value of Government Ambiguity - The housing-related government-sponsored enterprises Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have an ambiguous relationship with the federal government. Most purchasers of the GSEs' debt securities believe that this debt is implicitly backed by the U.S. government despite the lack of a legal basis for such a belief. December 18, 2003 - Burma and Two Burmese Banks Are Considered "Primary Money Laundering Concerns" - On November 18, 2003, the Department of the Treasury announced the designation of Burma and two Burmese banks to be of "primary money laundering concern" under Section 311 of the USA PATRIOT Act.
